Built slowly,
used daily.

This is the first issue of Slow Summers with our own work in it: a lawn at The Quail, a club outside Aiken, a rooftop above Sunset, a house on the East End, and a first look at Casa Morada in Islamorada. Around them, the openings, clubs and boats we have been watching this season.

Architects, interior studios, naval architects and course designers are named, because that is who reads this. Prado is credited only where we furnished the work. Every photograph is real and credited. Nothing in these pages is for sale.

Pendry crosses into the Caribbean

Pendry Barbados, on the northwest coast at St Peter near Speightstown, topped off on 23 April 2026 and is scheduled to open in 2027: 80 oceanfront guestrooms and suites, Spa Pendry, a Celebration Building and dockside venues over a 110-berth marina. Architecture by Robert Glazier with HKS; interiors by Studio Munge. It is the first Pendry in the Caribbean. Rendering: Pendry Barbados.

Forty-six terraces, and a yacht club

Pendry Residences Barbados is a limited collection of 46 fully furnished homes of two to five bedrooms, from US$2.725 million, with interiors by RH and views over the marina or the sea.

The residences sit alongside the hotel with their own lounge and access to the resort's amenities. Select ground-floor homes get private gardens and infinity-edge pools; the marina will house Pendry Yacht Club, the brand's first. Residences and berths are being sold now, ahead of the 2027 opening.

The terraces are the point. Two to five bedrooms indoors, and an outdoor room of the same order — deep shade, stone floors, furniture that has to hold up to salt air on the Platinum Coast. That is the specification conversation happening across the whole island right now.

Islands, beaches and a reflag

Three openings and announcements from the season, without pictures until the press offices release them.

i.

The tuner that started buying coastline

Abu Dhabi · Baku

BRABUS ISLAND, on Al Raha Beach in Abu Dhabi, is the Bottrop performance house’s first real estate, developed with Cosmo Developments: roughly 100,000 sq m of man-made island, four waterfront towers, 352 apartments and 96 villas, handover targeted for Q1 2029. A second island at Sea Breeze, Nardaran, outside Baku, was announced in May 2026 and went on sale in June. Two coastlines in eighteen months, from a brand with no hospitality history.

ii.

A beach in Mykonos becomes a hotel in Saudi Arabia

Triple Bay, Red Sea

Nammos Resort AMAALA opened to first guests on 7 September 2026: 110 keys and 20 private residences by Foster + Partners, drawing on Hijazi coastal architecture, with interiors by Lázaro Rosa Violán Studio and Elastic Architects. The beach club sits on its own island, reached by boardwalk or jetty. Since 2003 Nammos has been a stretch of Psarou sand; this is its first hotel.

iii.

Mondrian tries the all-inclusive

Cancún

Mondrian Cancún, All-Inclusive welcomed its first guests on 20 August 2026 on Grand Island, between the Caribbean and the Nichupté Lagoon. The 400-room tower opened in 2024 as Hyatt Vivid Grand Island; two years on it is renovated and reflagged as the first all-inclusive under the Mondrian name.

The club that sets the table

Friday of Car Week belongs to The Quail. This year Luxury Rally Club handed its platinum lawn to BRABUS for two premieres.

Trevor Johnson founded Luxury Rally Club in 2018 and built it on rallies that put access ahead of scale: the Pre-War Motoring Classic, a Countach anniversary run, the Bentley 100 Years rally. It also runs the Santa Lucia Preserve Concours & Cocktails, eighth edition this year, the night before The Quail. In July it agreed to join the duPont REGISTRY Group, alongside Canossa and Cavallino.

The car carries a founder’s name. Bodo Buschmann started BRABUS in Bottrop in 1977; his son Constantin built the grand tourer his father kept describing. Pre-preg carbon body, hand-built 5.2-litre V12 biturbo, 1,000 PS. On the Cabriolet, a “77” motif is woven into the jacquard roof rather than printed on it.

Look past the cars and the lawn was an outdoor room built for a single day: a black pavilion, market umbrellas, clipped trees in planters, low seating on grass. The brand putting its name on two islands dressed a field in Carmel Valley in the same register. Disclosure: the lounge furniture was ours.

The Riot House, fourteen floors up

It opened in 1963 as Gene Autry’s Hotel Continental, the first high-rise on the Sunset Strip. By the seventies it was the Continental Hyatt House, and the touring bands who stayed there gave it another name.

Hyatt reopened the tower in January 2009 as Andaz West Hollywood, the brand’s first in North America, with architecture and interiors by Janson Goldstein. The rooftop pool sits on the fourteenth floor: the city and the Strip on one side, the Hollywood Hills on the other.

A rooftop has to be the reason guests come up. The view does half the work; the furniture has to do the rest, seat a full deck on a Saturday and look the same after a summer of sun and cleaning. The plan runs zone by zone: a long line of chaises at the pool edge, a teak sectional inside every cabana, and rope and teak lounge seating along the glass for the hours after the pool closes.

The yacht with no engine room

Zero is the first sailing yacht of her size designed to run entirely on energy she harvests herself: 250 kW of hydrogeneration under sail, solar on deck, and 5.2 megawatt-hours of batteries weighing 28 tonnes. Seven years, and no combustion engine.

The idea formed in 2019 and took more than 60,000 hours of research before construction began in 2023. The aluminium hull was built at Jacht- en Scheepswerf Gouwerok, barged to Vitters in Zwartsluis for outfitting, rolled out of the construction hall on 6 July 2026 and floated at Harlingen days later, where her Panamax-height masts by Carbo-Link were stepped. Sea trials and system commissioning are under way now.

What interests us is the surface, not the sermon. The overhangs are long, the superstructure sits low, the bow is a spoon, and the deck is Tesumo rather than teak — a material decision taken for reasons beyond appearance and detailed to read as though it always belonged. Deck hardware is matte. The transom is metal, hand-painted to look like wood.

Schematics, software and test data are being published through the non-profit Foundation° platform.

Old Barnwell plays the long game

Old Barnwell · Aiken, South Carolina

Nick and Sarah Schreiber's private club outside Aiken opened its first eighteen in 2023, Brian Schneider and Blake Conant's first solo design after years with Tom Doak, and it went straight to No. 51 in GOLF's US Top 100. Walking only, caddies always, a kids' course since 2024. The second eighteen, the Gilroy, opens for preview play on 22 October. Clubhouse and lodge by Northworks with Basic Projects. We furnished the club in October.

Also on the drawing board

Cabot Wilds, announced 15 September: 2,500 acres on the River Philip in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, with a riverfront course by Jeff Mingay and preview play in late 2027. And in Union County, North Carolina, Gil Hanse will route The Trail, a walking-only private course on 300 acres with twelve cottages and a 36,000 sq ft clubhouse, opening 2028 or 2029.

Two beach clubs, a studio, two cars

i.

A federal landmark becomes a beach club

Rockaway, New York

The 1932 Art Deco bathhouse at Jacob Riis Park reopened on 14 August 2026 as the Rockaway Ocean Club, after nine years and an $88 million restoration by Beyer Blinder Belle for CBSK Developers. Terracotta arcades, twin courtyards, a pool, a rooftop restaurant and 28 rooms. A preview season now; the full club opens in spring 2027.

ii.

A club built around the sunset

Seminyak, Bali

At W Bali – Seminyak, Alunê replaces WOOBAR, designed by WELD around one fact: the beach faces south-west, so the sun sets straight into the club. Amber glass, hand-cut mosaic, carved timber and stone greys taken from the shoreline.

iii.

Helen Bergin and the loggia problem

Palm Beach

Helen Bergin opened her Palm Beach studio in 2016 after Annsley Interiors, Rinfret and Robert Passal. Her published Palm Beach house with architect Kristin Kellogg sets a loggia under a coffered cypress ceiling: an outdoor room specified to the standard of the living room, and asked to survive salt, UV and August humidity.

iv.

Two designers, one week, opposite arguments

Gothenburg · Ingolstadt

Polestar’s Formula 2030 concept, revealed 8 September 2026, is the first full statement from design head Philipp Romers. A day earlier in Paris, Audi showed the A2 e-tron: its most efficient car, first deliveries early 2027, and a name everyone will read as a successor to the 2000 A2.
