Prado Outdoor project
Scottsdale Sanctuary
Scottsdale Sanctuary is a desert property in Arizona, where outdoor furniture faces the opposite problem from a coastal installation. There is almost no moisture, and an extraordinary amount of heat and ultraviolet light.
Desert conditions punish material choices that pass easily elsewhere. Metal seating surfaces become too hot to use in direct sun, painted finishes chalk, and low-grade timber checks and splits as it dries out. Grade A teak heartwood is used here for its high natural oil content, which keeps it dimensionally stable through extreme diurnal temperature swings without treatment. Where sling seating was specified, Serge Ferrari fabric was used for its stability under sustained UV.
Placement follows shade. Dining and lounge groups sit under structures and deep overhangs, with lighter, movable pieces for the hours when the pool terrace is comfortable. Upholstery is Sunbrella solution-dyed acrylic in pale desert neutrals, chosen both for fade resistance and because lighter fabric runs cooler in direct sun. Cushions were cut and sewn in South Carolina on quick-dry foam.
